Packing Plates For Your Move
Some important tips on how to pack your plates during a move so they arrive in the same condition as you packed them.

When you are relocating, you will need to know how to pack delicate crockery to ensure it arrives in a safe condition. So, when it comes to kitchen packing, dishes, especially plates, must be correctly packed. Learn how to pack plates safely so they arrive at your new house with this simple step-by-step instruction.

Packing materials

Knowing what resources you'll need is crucial to understanding how to pack dishes for relocating. To begin, gather several medium-sized boxes. We recommend purchasing high-quality moving boxes. You'll have peace of mind knowing they won't fall apart due to repeated use. You can also purchase specially made containers to transport and protect plates.

You'll need the following packing materials for the actual packing:

  • Packing paper
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing tape and a tape gun
  • A marker to label boxes

Preparation

Whether you're using an old box or a new one, you should use packing tape to support the bottom. Apply a couple of layers of tape, then push on the bottom with your palm to test it.

Roll up many sheets of packing paper or newspaper into wads of paper. This will be used to line the box's bottom and top. You could also use bubble wrap, but it is costly and difficult to dispose of.

Wrap one by one

Personalized wrapping is required to protect your plates from breakage during the move. Place a pile of packing sheets out flat in front of you on a large table or work area. Make sure the sheets are big enough to wrap around the plates entirely.

Place the first plate in the center of your packing sheets to begin. Fold one corner of the sheet over the plate until the plate is completely covered. Pick up the second plate (of comparable size) and stack it on top of the first. Then fold the remaining corners over the second plate with your hands.

Keep packing two plates at a time in each packing sheet so they are fully covered on all sides. Lastly, you can tape them together just to make sure they dont unfold.

Pack your plates sideways in the box

When moving long distances, the best approach to pack dishes is to stack them sideways in the box. Plates should not be packed flat because this can result in shattered crockery. Plates that are stacked on their sides can withstand more pressure than those that are stacked flat. Make sure your plates fit into each other and line up across the box when you're done. Fill to the brim, leaving only a small amount of room between them.

Wrap and seal the boxes

Continue wrapping and packing the dishes inside the box until it is tightly packed.

Place linens or towels on top of the dishes if there is space left in the box, or use more balled-up wads of paper to fill the gaps before sealing the box. Strong packing tape should be used to seal the box.

Mark the box as fragile and write a description of the contents on the exterior, such as "kitchen" or "dining room."

Move the fragile boxes carefully.

Once the truck arrives, move your fragile boxes cautiously. The last thing you want to happen is for your possessions to be ruined before the move begins! Your boxes with plates should be placed on the floor when you get to the truck. They will not move around on the road or topple over since they are heavier. Place delicate boxes below desks and tables if you're moving them as well. This will safeguard them even more during the move.
